Planning Your Refinishing Timeline
One of the most common questions we hear is “how long will this take?” The answer depends on several factors, but most residential refinishing projects take 3 to 5 days from start to finish.
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect at each stage.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Day 1: Preparation & Initial Sanding
The first day involves moving furniture (if not already done), setting up dust containment, and beginning the drum sanding process. This initial pass removes the bulk of the old finish and surface damage.
Day 2: Fine Sanding & Filling
The second day focuses on progressively finer sanding passes and wood filler application. This is where gaps, cracks, and imperfections are sealed to create a smooth, unified surface.
Day 3: Final Sand & Staining
After the wood filler cures, a final orbital sanding creates the perfectly smooth surface needed for stain. Stain is applied and allowed to dry.
Days 4-5: Finish Coats
Two to three coats of finish are applied, with drying time between each coat. The type of finish (oil-based vs. water-based) affects drying time significantly.
Factors That Affect Timeline
- Square footage: Larger areas naturally take longer
- Number of coats: More coats mean more drying time
- Finish type: Oil-based finishes take longer to cure than water-based
- Stain complexity: Custom color matching may require additional time
- Wood condition: Heavily damaged floors may need extra sanding passes
- Humidity and temperature: North Idaho’s climate can affect drying times, especially in winter
When Can You Walk on Your Floors?
With water-based finishes, light traffic is typically possible within 24 hours of the final coat. Oil-based finishes may require 48-72 hours. We recommend waiting a full week before replacing furniture and area rugs.
Tips for Preparing Your Home
- Remove all furniture from the rooms being refinished
- Plan to be out of the house during staining and sealing (especially with oil-based products)
- Secure pets in a separate area away from the work zone
- Remove window treatments that hang close to the floor
